Kingston shoots 65 to lead in Spain

05/13/2010 - Son Servera, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - South Africa's James Kingston fired a five-under 65 to take the first-round lead Thursday at the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor.
Kingston mixed six birdies with one bogey on the Pula Golf Club course to set an early pace that nobody could match.
Spain's Alvaro Velasco shot a three-under 67 to sit alone in second place, two strokes off Kingston's lead.
Alejandro Canizares of Spain, Ireland's Gary Murphy, France's Raphael Jacquelin and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen share third place at two-under 68.
Playing in perfect conditions, Kingston began his round on the 10th hole and opened the tournament with a birdie to move immediately into red figures. He added a birdie at the 14th to make the turn at two-under.
Kingston made another birdie at No. 2, then took his only bogey of the round on the next hole. He immediately recovered the dropped shot with a birdie at No. 3 and made two further birdies to get into the clubhouse with lead.
Calling the course "tricky" and "complicated" when it's windy, Kingston said it was difficult to get the ball close to the hole. But the 44-year-old has set himself up nicely for the last three rounds as he tries to win his third European Tour title.
Kingston captured his two wins at the 2008 South African Airways Open and last season's Mercedes-Benz Championship.
"I kept the ball in play nicely off the tee and rolled it nicely," said Kingston, who has missed the cut three times in his last five starts. "I have been playing decently lately, but still not well enough."
Velasco also started his round with a birdie on the 10th hole. He bogeyed the 12th and 14th, but came back with four birdies the rest of the way to shoot his 67.
Among his birdies was a 75-foot chip-in on the sixth hole.
"It doesn't seem to be a hard course, the rough is light," said Velasco, who will turn 29 on Saturday, "but there aren't many birdie holes."
NOTES: This is the inaugural year of the tournament...The course previously hosted the Majorca Classic five times...Course designer Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain won that event in 2005...Olazabal is battling rheumatism and is not playing in the tournament.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
